Searching Tips

You can enter kanji, hiragana, katakana, romaji or english as search terms. If your english or romaji can be converted to Japanese we will add that automatically as an additional Japanese search term.

Mult-word searching - you can enter multiple search terms and each matching result will need to contain all the search terms you enter. For example: big fish will match any entries that have the words big AND fish anywhere in the entry.

Exact matches - as opposed to multi-word searching, an exact match is performed by surrounding your search term in double-quotes. For example: "big fish" will match entries that have big fish as two words adjacent to each other.

Wildcards - you can perform a wild-card search by adding an asterisk to the start or end of a search term, for example cat* would return cat, cat's, catastrophe etc.

When searching by Japanese, by default the search term is expanded to a wildcard search - if you want an exact match you will need to surround your word in double-quotes.

Conjugation searching - We will automatically detect if your search term is a verb or adjective that is not in it's root form and return the root word.

Searching by tags

There are a number of tags that you can use to find kanji and words. Some tags, particularly the jlpt tags exist in both the dictionary and kanji dictionary and will return both types of results.

Tags can be used by themselves or with search terms to further refine your results. Please note that tags are case-sensitive and auto-generated from their respective dictionaries.
