JLPT - What is it?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験 Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken), or JLPT, is a standardized criterion-referenced test to evaluate and certify Japanese language proficiency for non-native speakers, covering language knowledge, reading ability, and listening ability.

The JLPT is broken into 5 levels, JLPT N1 (hardest) to JLPT N5 (easiest). Previously it was based on 4 levels: JLPT 1 to JLPT 4, however it was decided the gap between JLPT 2 and JLPT 3 was too great and a new level, JLPT N3 was created.
